San Jose Sharks
In 1990, George and Gordon Gund sold their share of the North Stars and were awarded a team in the Bay area, based in San Jose. San Jose Sharks was the name given to the team and during their first two they played at the Cow Palace in Daly City, outside of San Francisco. During this time under George Kingston they were one of the worst teams in the NHL. In their third season 1993-94, the Sharks moved to their current home of HP Pavilion under head coach Kevin Constantine and they had one of the biggest turnarounds in NHL history finishing with a 33-35-16 record making the playoffs with 82 points which was 58 points better than the pervious season. They were seeded eighth in the Western Conference playoffs and faced the Red Wings, who were picked to win the Stanley Cup, however in one of the biggest upsets in Stanley Cup Playoff history, the underdog Sharks defeated the Red Wings in seven games. In 1994-95, the Sharks made it back to the playoffs and made it to the second round too. Ray Whitney scored a goal in double overtime of game seven of the conference quarterfinals against the Calgary Flames. During the 1995 season rain caused the Guadalupe River to flood and made it impossible for anyone to get into the San Jose Arena. In 1995-96, the Sharks ended up in last place in the Pacific Division and failed to make the playoffs. The team needed some changes made and so the rebuilding began with Al Sims as the leader and his leadership didn't help considering they once again finished in last place winning only 27 games.
In 1997-98, the Sharks made it back to the playoffs under the leadership of new head coach, Darryl Sutter, and in 1999-00 the Sharks finished with their first ever winning record, but earned a match-up against the President's Trophy champion St. Louis Blues in the first round. The Sharks managed to eliminate the Blues in seven games; however they were then eliminated by the Dallas Stars in only five games the next round. The Sharks made it to the 2001 playoffs, but were eliminated in the first round by the Blues. The Sharks had a breakout year in 2001-02 winning their first Pacific Division title and defeated the Phoenix Coyotes in the first round, but were defeated by the Colorado Avalanche in the second round. After the 2001-02 season the Gund's sold the Sharks to a group of local investors led by team president Greg Jamison. The team went on to miss the 2002-03 playoffs. The 2003-04 season ended up being the best season ever for the Sharks. They had the third best record in the league with a team record of 104 points which was 31 more than the previous season. They won the Pacific Division Championship and were seeded second in the Western Conference. They did well in the playoffs advancing to the Conference Finals, but were defeated in the conference finals by the Calgary Flames.
In the 2005-06 season the Sharks rallied to the playoffs as the fifth seed for the Western Conference. They eliminated the Predators in the first round and met up with the Edmonton Oilers in the second round. The Oilers put an end to the Sharks season in the second round of the playoffs. The San Jose Sharks made significant changes in the offseason in hopes of turning this team around to head in the right direction of the Stanley Cup Finals.
